Artist Biography

Macarena Nicoelle de Jesús Herrada Michaud was born in Santiago de Chile, October 7, 1984. At the age of fourteen, she began formal training at the Martín Soria Academy of Fine Arts (Academia de Bellas Artes de Martín Soria), in the Chilean capital. There, she developed the foundation for what became her artistic career. Four years later, she began advance studies, still at the academy. (Martín Soria is a Spanish painter and illustrator as well as the author of many essays discussing art theory). At the same time, Herrada studies elements of filmmaking, photography and theater including lighting, make-up, and set design. Her studies in anatomy also lead her to a fascination for thanatology (make-up of the deceased in preparation for viewing).

In 2006, Miss Herrada finishes her studies at the Martin Soria Academy. She also begins work at a clinic assisting in kinesiology, skin pigmentation, and reconstructive procedures. She also works in make-up for theater and classical ballet. The next year, Miss Herrada relocates to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in search of new artistic experience. Her interest in naturalism leads her to studies of human anatomy at the Argentine Medical Association (Asociación Médica Argentina). The following year, she begins studies in sculpture with live model in the workshop of Gustavo Ibarra. She also serves as assistant in various drawing workshops in Buenos Aires.
For the past two years, Miss Herrada follows an intensive study of croquis (sketching), as well as drawing from live model at the Stimulus Association of Fine Arts (Asociación de Estímulo de Bellas Artes) under Carlos Terribili, Gustavo Rubinstein and Carlos Fels. Last year, she also studied under Aldo Caponi life-size sculpture in collaboration with Axel Caponi.
Miss Herrada began curatorial studies and art history at the Universidad de Museo Social Argentino this year. In addition, she works in her private studio. She augments her education through workshops and seminars focusing on composition and art appreciation.

The underlying characteristic in the young artist’s work is a passion for the human figure. Her figures express a naturalistic expression, unifying a gestural touch with the rigorous study for the human form. Her focus is, both, intimate and allegorical with the power to unite the duality exist within the sensibilities of the human being. Miss Herrada aptly brings together the gesture and the refined elements of drawing reflecting the world of reality and ideas.
